'I thought she was a lesbian': Christian Slater recalls the first time he met Brittany Lopez as he announces engagement

He's been dating a woman named Brittany Lopez for nearly four years.

And things have gotten serious between Christian Slater and his girlfriend as he announced their engagement on Wednesday's episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

The 43-year-old actor revealed that he thought his brunette fiancée was a lesbian upon first meeting her at a Miami resort called Little Palm Island in 2009.

'This girl came walking along with another lady, a slightly older lady,' the former heartthrob told Fallon.

'I was sitting in my usual spot, eating my oatmeal that morning - and this spot was famous for people proposing to each other - and the next thing I know she gets down on one knee and proposes to this older lady.'

Christian continued: 'I thought I had just witnessed a nice lesbian engagement, so I was coming over to say congratulations, but it turns out it was her aunt and she was just trying to help her aunt capture the beauty and the romance of the moment.'

'She was making a joke, and I witnessed it, and it intrigued me, and the next thing I know we were hanging out in the Everglades.'

It will be the second marriage for the True Romance actor who divorced Ryan Haddon in 2007.

In 2003, Haddon was arrested for giving Slater a gash on his neck which required 20 stitches at a Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.

The former couple are parents to a 13-year-old son named Jaden and an 11-year-old daughter named Eliana.

Slater also had a two-year relationship with Jimmy Choo boss Tamara Mellon and a five-year relationship with Nina Huang.

Huang ended up suing the actor for palimony, which was resolved out of court.

In the past, the Heathers hunk reportedly romanced Samantha Mathis, Christy Turlington, Rosie Perez, and Sharon Stone.

However Christian's career experienced a new low after his horror film Playback grossed a dismal $264 at the U.S box office last year.

The Interview with a Vampire star has four films due out this year, including space thriller Stranded, the Lars von Trier real sex-drama Nymphomaniac, and a drama with Martin Sheen called Undiscovered Gyrl.
